History of the World Series of Poker
Dating back to 1970, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the most prestigious and long-standing poker tournament series in the world.
Its history is marked by growth, innovation and the rise of poker as a popular competitive sport.
The WSOP was conceived by Benny Binion, a casino owner in Las Vegas. The first event was held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino and involved a series of cash games, with the winner determined by a secret ballot among the players.
Johnny Moss was crowned the first champion, receiving a silver cup as his prize.
The format changed to a freezeout tournament in 1971, where players are eliminated once they lose all their chips.
The Main Event had a $10,000 buy-in - a standard that remains today.
Johnny Moss won again, securing the title and a cash prize.
The WSOP expanded in the 1980s, with multiple new events and different poker variants being introduced to the series.
The series continued to grow both in number of players and events in the coming years, with increasing numbers of international players entering. By 1991, the Main Event payout hit $1 million for the first time.
As online poker became established, the event's popularity started to soar globally as we reached the turn of the century and in 2003, the success of Chris Moneymaker contributed to a global poker boom.
Chris Moneymaker, an amateur player who won his seat through an online satellite tournament, won the Main Event. His victory inspired poker players worldwide, significantly increasing the number of participants in subsequent years.
The next few years saw further expansion, including the introduction of the World Series of Poker Circuit, a series of tournaments held at various locations throughout the year.
The Main Event saw a record-breaking 8,773 participants in 2006. Jamie Gold won the largest first-place prize in WSOP history at that time, over $12 million.
Live streaming and enhanced media coverage has helped online poker continue to grow each year. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the WSOP adapted by hosting a series of online events, and since then, the growth and evolution of the World Series of Poker has continued.
At GGPoker, hundreds of players can now win their way to the Main Event by entering qualifying events online.
