The Poker Hall of Fame has introduced a new voting process for 2026 that could induct up to six nominees annually. The revised system includes four votes per member, a 22-vote benchmark, public results, and a live ESPN announcement.
The Poker Hall of Fame is set for a significant change in 2026 after officials introduced a new induction process that moves away from the long-standing winner-takes-all format.
Under the revised system, as many as six of the eight finalists could earn a place in the Hall of Fame during a single year.
Nominations for the 2026 Poker Hall of Fame are now open. The public will first determine the top eight nominees before the final decision is handed over to the 33 living members of the Poker Hall of Fame.
The updated process was announced on The Countdown, the WSOP's official pregame show. Once the list of eight nominees is finalized, every living Hall of Fame member will receive four votes.
Each voter can select up to four different candidates, with one vote allocated to each nominee. The path to induction is based on a clear benchmark. Any nominee who receives votes from at least 22 members will secure automatic entry into the Poker Hall of Fame.
If no candidate reaches that threshold, the nominee with the highest overall vote total will claim the only available induction spot for that year.
The revised structure represents one of the biggest changes to the Hall of Fame selection process and could significantly alter how many players are honored in a single class.
Poker Hall of Famer Phil Hellmuth shared his reaction to the changes in an interview with PokerNews, expressing concerns about the possibility of six inductees in one year.
"That's not good," he said. "I think two a year is the right number. They should just let two in per year, I don't care about the voting [system]."
His comments highlight the ongoing debate over how many candidates should be inducted annually under the new framework.
The WSOP also confirmed that the complete voting results will be released publicly. Making the final numbers available will allow the poker community to see how close individual nominees came to earning induction.
The added transparency could also encourage more organized, fan-driven support efforts for future candidates.
The 2026 Poker Hall of Fame class will be announced live on ESPN during the WSOP Main Event final table. The new voting model could also create opportunities for long-overlooked figures such as Mike Matusow and Matt Savage to potentially earn induction in the years ahead.
